Opportunities for Youth
Disaster
Preparedness Service-Learning Project AGE:
Fourth, fifth and sixth grades, though curriculum
can be adapted to other standards Project
Description: Students engage as active
participants of school safety teams while
reinforcing classroom science.
●Pre-service
activities focus on learning about disasters and how
communities respond.
●Service
activities engage students in making recommendations
to their school safety council to update the
school’s safety procedure. Their voice will not only
assist the school in assessing their safety
procedures but will help them see the need for all
home, school and communities to be prepared for
emergency situations.
●Post-service
activities will focus again on classroom study, but
will encourage students to create a common list of
disaster preparation needs and reflect on what they
have learned.
Special Thanks: This curriculum was
developed by Volunteer Center Orange County in
partnership with the Orange County Department of
Education, the Costa Mesa Fire Department and the
American Red Cross.

Ideas for Service-Learning
focused on Hurricane/Disaster Preparation and Relief
Other ideas to inspire your service:
These ideas come from volunteers, staff and other
creative thinkers around the county. Feel free
to
share you ideas and we will add them to this
list as they roll in.
1. Students baby-sit for FREE for your parents
and neighbors so they can attend important meeting
related to post-fire recovery.
2. Organize a drive for "your own" - for
example, Girl Scouts can collect badges for scouts
who lost their homes.
3. Visit the San Diego Wildfires Education
Project (website above) to learn about native
species that need fire to germinate and create your
own native plant nursery.

A note regarding clothing, toy and food
drives... at the moment, most agencies are
overwhelmed with in-kind donations. If
you are a student or teacher organizing a
drive, please consider one of the other
projects listed on this page. At the
very least, we ask you to call around and
confirm with an agency willing to accept
your donations should you proceed with a
drive.
